Dramatherapy is a form of psychological therapy in which a range of performance and creative arts are used to promote and support emotional wellbeing. With an emphasis on creativity, dramatherapy can be beneficial when talking alone doesn't seem to work.
Dramatherapy sessions can be accessed by anyone who would like the opportunity to discover more about themselves, explore difficult feelings or life experiences or enhance their wellbeing.
Through creative processes clients have the opportunity to observe their life experiences from a different perspective however no prior experience of drama, theatre or acting is necessary and sessions are always led by the client, allowing them to move at their own pace. Sessions do not need to be filled with creative activity, sometimes it is just as important to sit and talk.
The British Association of Dramatherapists describes dramatherapy as...
"...a form of psychological therapy in which all of the performance arts are utilised within the therapeutic relationship...the therapy gives equal validity to body and mind within the dramatic context; stories, myths, playtexts, puppetry, masks and improvisation are examples of the range of artistic interventions a dramatherapist may employ. These will enable the client to explore difficult and painful life experiences through an indirect approach".
